Week 13, post 1

1. In my search for similar businesses, I found it difficult to find much in the way of private/small business owner type baseball card shops/businesses.  I do think they are something of a dying breed, given the online availability and easy access to card shopping and collecting.   I did not find advertising, despite actively looking, so I would say the advertising efforts are lacking!

2. The online presence that I did find was largely card production companies, or mainstream hobby stores.  For those businesses there advertising was catchy, colorful.  Oftentimes the card companies will promote pre-sales of new products coming out, creating the urge to pre-order to avoid missing out.  This is a great strategy of creating urgency which gets the consumer to buy...even when there is no product available!

3. Traditional advertising of TV and radio I feel are very ineffective in today's society.  We can fast forward through commercials, or even pay for ad free streaming of youtube and related sites.  The same goes for radio.  We now have so many music streaming options that give the listener ad free music, it seems that radio is becoming outdated.  We are able to pretty easily avoid commercials in both of these mediums.   The ads being run miss a significant amount of people.  Advertising on social media is the way to go. The ads sneak into your feed and yes you can swipe or scroll past, but you still see it.  If done well, the ads can be quite eye catching and will draw the scroller's attention.
